I wonder why my pants don’t fit as easy

I am sure that everyone from time to time gets into a craving of something, this week for the Carbunkle Trumpet household it was for a juicy grilled burger fresh from the grill. At our local grocery store in the meat department they have a ground beef burger that is stuffed with all kinds of love from bacon, different cheeses, and even spicy sausage and they look great. This evening the Trumpets were trying the stuffed cheese version and for my readers south of the border I apologize but I will gladly trade you lobster or fresh fish any day so let me know.

Doc, I have no idea why my Cholesterol is so high, I eat lean meat!

Oh, they are almost done, I am starting to get a chubby!

Momma working on a dish for her Hen party tomorrow

Daddy, are you cooking me a burger too?

In closing, they were excellent and my craving was satisfied!

It is a good thing I wasn’t packing heat today, this blog would be typed from 201 Poplar (Jail)

Note to self – call in sick from work the next time a presidential candidate comes into town! More on that later.
Ok, now I have time to put this on a computer screen, first of all let me say that I consider myself a passive aggressive person as my motto has always been love all, serve all and I think of myself as an even keeled person. This is the case 99 percent of the time with one little exception to the Carbunkle mantra – I hate being late and I lose my $hit when it happens.
My office is near the airport and because I am not tied to a desk I get out seeing customers and things like that so I am always on the go and making appointments and on the go. Today is the first presidential debate down in Oxford, MS (hour south of Memphis) so I knew that traffic would be touch and go with Obama and McCain flying into town and I am sure there would be a lot of pomp and circumstance so I budgeted my time. Obama flew into town during lunch time and they parked his plane at one of the private jet hangers and of he went I assume.
Now, I am heading back to the office and I notice a couple police motorcycle cops at the intersection and think to myself “What are they doing here, they should be on the other side of the airport?” Next thing I know they spring into action and block the intersection and I am now stuck thinking that it won’t be that long…….
Waiting…..
More Waiting…..
We are talking 20 minutes here and still waiting…..
Did McCain slip and fall getting onto his bus, what is taking so long…..
Wait, is that a car coming?
23 cars/motorcycle cops later here comes the McCain bus to be followed by a ton more cars, vans, suburbans, and an ambulance!
Now give me a freaking break! When President Bush was in town 2 years ago with the Japanese Prime Minister and they went to the Civil Rights Museum, to Graceland, back downtown to the Rendezvous and traffic sang like a champ, you get two candidates and it is like “Who has the bigger motorcade!”
Ok, I am better!

What are we waiting for, the quickest way to Oxford is on the other side of the airport

Still waiting…

I mean, is every Cop in Memphis working the motorcades today???

Finally the bus, but aren’t we in a gas shortage now?

One of the 10 Vans carrying the Press, would have been cheaper to get them a big bus if you ask me!

Ah the Ambulance because Oxford doesn’t have any hospitals or clinics…

Wait a Mississippi trooper, is all of Mississippi working this thing too? Could have robbed banks in Memphis and Mississippi today and gotten of scot free!

Look as his Shiny purty plane!

What can I say, I am glad I didn’t have live ammo today!

two out of three ain’t bad!

Ah a glorious Saturday, the weather has a slight chill to it, the fair is in town and today there are three sporting events that are ‘must see!’ To try to explain SEC (South Eastern Conference) football to someone who does not live in this part of the country is like explaining ice hockey to a Belizean child who has never seen temperatures below 50 so I won’t even try. I will tell you that weddings are scheduled depending on if their team is home or away and I would say that 80% of the cars on the road on a Friday are proudly flying their favorite teams colors – It is religion!

Now there is only one place that one could watch a couple of sporting events from a comfortable chair, have an ice cold beer, a great burger and they even allow me to smoke a Perdomo Cabinet Series cigar (as long as you bring Andy one too) so off we head to the Tavern. Alex’s tavern is in the heart of the hood in the beautiful Crimefree Evergreen district and has been over serving for 50+ years. The owner is Rocky Kasfastas (yep he’s Greek) and he took it over from his father (Alex) when he passed away and it is considered the oldest tavern in the city. We arrive to find 2 seats at the bar with the new 1000.00 bar seats and get luck to have the Cubs/Cardinals game on one big screen and the Vols/Gator’s game on the other so off we go!
In the end the Cubs clinch the division and the Vols get smoked so it was a good day!
Oh and you may be wondering why I said 2 out of 3, well my alma mater got killed by Bama by I don’t want to talk about it! As Sonny Wilson would say “It sure is hard to be Hog fan right now!”
Ok pictures!

You have to enter the Tavern from the back door by the patio and Valet Parking stand.

Alex’s picture hangs proudly above the Jukeboxes

How Sweet is this, Cubs game on the left and Vols game on the right!

Who says Alex’s isn’t a family bar, behind the cash register are pictures of patron’s kids or nephews. (See the kid to the right of the BMI sticker..That’s my nephew/godchild!)

(left to right) Andy the Bartender, Lance (another hog fan) and Rock-Mo the owner

Sorry for rubbing it in to my Cardinal fans but the last time the Cubs won a world series The model T ford was in production!

Let your Freak Flag Fly

Ah after a great evening of the B52’s and since Ike postponed the Hogs/Horns game till the end of the month I figured it was time to head to the Cooper Young festival in Midtown. Midtown is an older part of Memphis and the Cooper Young area could be considered the East Village/Deep Ellum beatnick hippies who needs a bath. Now my motto has always been serve all and love all so off we went, and had to swing by my good friend Lindsey D for a quick libation and to say hello.
Did the festival and got a chance to eat my all time favorite festival food which is a hot dog that has been battered in a yellow batter and friend up golden brown with mustard slathered on it – AKA a Corn Dog or Pronto Pup!
Afterwards we headed back downtown and went over to some friends who were having a cook out and had a good evening. I gotta go as week 2 is fixing to start!

Wonder how I can get one of those little carts down to San Pedro, I bet there is a market for that at Central Park!
There are 2 things that I think should be left at home for a large street festival, dogs and this contraption!
Ms Doty and her rather Hot Pink Door!
Mel – Honey you need to lay off the corn dogs you are getting a Carbunkle tummy, oh wait I am just fat, and she is expecting! Boy name – Willie Curry, Girl name – Reba Curry I like it!

Got to love Cooper Young!
Another Cart, the owner said it retails for about 2800.USD from New York.

So why did you make sandwiches and stuff like that, you going to a B52’s show or something?

Yes we did and they rocked the house!
One good thing about living here in Memphis other than the horrible drivers, shitty school system, a mayor who loves himself more than…(ok I will stop) is we get a great assortment of music acts. I am working on a post later but we purchased a table for the “Live at the Garden concert Series” and so far we have seen Jewel (kinda lame) Earth Wind and Fire (wow!), Crosby Stills and Nash (WOW!) and this evening we have that ole Athens GA band the B52’s in. We always catch their show when they are in town and this one was just as good! Ok, here are the pictures

Snicker at my previous recipe submission, those things were good!

Jason D Williams, what are you doing here? You were on the Blog from 2 weeks ago!

Ok, that is pretty impressive you have that much flexibility!

Now Jason get off of the Piano and play it correctly! All kidding aside, he put on a great set and got the crowd ready for the B52’s! Always a bonus when he is playing!

Wonder why we have a picture of Ernie M and Momma? More to come later for my fellow “Sauce off competitor’s!”

Ah Fred is back and he is still as “Sissy Mary” as he always is!

We will meet in Mesopotamia!

Strobe Light!

Nice Glasses Ford, do they match your purse?

Cannon what are you doing? Take those funny glasses off now!

Now Momma is getting into the game, oh brother, I know what is going to happen next!

Ok, can we get back to the show please?

Sad to say that not one of them were born when “Love Shack” was released on a vinyl record!

Bless her heart, she thought this was a Hannah Montana show!

Rut Row – Fred has a cowbell must be time for Planet Claire!

Fred, thanks for the shout out, I appreciate it and we will see you next time!

And with that Ladies and Gentlemen, Carbunkle has left the building!

A Recipe? Who does he think he is Emeril Trumpet?

Since Hurricane Ike was like “Big Wheel keep on turning, Proud Mary keep on burning” the old HQ down in Houston was closed so I figured that I should follow suit and burn some of my sick/pto time so I called in saying I had Anal Glaucoma. Chilled out and ended up going to the grocery store for the ingredients for our Surf and Turf Rock Lobster sandwiches for the B52’s that night. Sorry but I am not a big fan of measurement as I was taught to do the taste and make sure it has the look the recipe is;
ROCK LOBSTER/SURF AND TURF SANDWICHES
(for the lobster portion)
2 lobster tails removed from shell and cut into small pieces
1/2 pound butter
1/2 of a diced onion
juice from 10 lemons
heavy whipping cream
chopped pencil green onions
Melt butter and saute onions till soft and add lobster. When lobster is pink add lemon juice and heavy whipping cream and reduce in half. Add green onions when you remove from heat.
(for the Turf portion)
2-3 good sized Fillets or any cut of meat you prefer marinate in olive oil for at least 3 hours
Salt and Pepper
Worchester sauce
your favorite steak seasoning (Montreal whatever you like)
Cover fillets in a good portion of worchester Sauce and apply seasoning
Sear steaks on both sides in a HOT saute pan over med high heat
Place steaks in a 400 degree oven for 12 – 17 minutes depending on temperature (you may want to use a meat thermometer so you don’t under/over cook your meat. (he he – He said meat)
Let steaks rest at least 10 minutes before cutting as so juices can rest
Slice into half inch strips to serve
(condiments)
Marinate (for 3 hours) sliced red onion and sliced tomatoes in red wine vinegar in a non-reactive bowl
1/2 cup of mayo and 3 tablespoons of horseradish sauce stirred together (you can add more horsey if you like it hot)
The rest is up to you if you like lettuce, cheese or pickles
Get a good french bread (hard crust) for your sandwiches and put equal parts of lobster and meat on sandwiches and enjoy!
Oh and I ended up swinging by and seeing Mr Vince as I got some more cigars today!

You have got to love a 60 year old Italian man who owns not only a good pizza pie joint but also a pretty good tobacco shop with a great stocked walk in humidor.
