The Trumpets return to Memphis for a Wedding

Remember in the wedding scene from the Godfather where Luca Brasi is rehearsing his speech for Don Vito Corleone? Yeah that never happened this past weekend but since this wedding was the daughter of my good friend Guido, I had to throw it out there. The groom isn’t even Eye-Talian but that is ok. I am relieved to know that Dr. KD-B will never have to worry about changing a light bulb in the overhead light for the rest of her life. <inside joke>

The wedding was downtown in the South Mail district and for me to try to recap the wedding vows, the first kiss as Mr. & Mrs. B, or the father – daughter dance…..I just can’t do it justice. We have known the bride and her parents for many years. Heck Dr. KD-B was one of our first dog babysitters when she was high school. To see her graduate from High School, University, achieve her Doctorate, and now get married to a great guy is very satisfying to Mrs. Trumpet and I. We wish the bride and the groom much happiness and hey Dr. KD-B; remember Uncle Robo’s response when people ask “when are you going to have kids?”

img_0390Hey BD – You remember Rule 1? When Dr. KD-B starts asking at Labor Day for the Christmas Tree to be set up feel free to pop this song into your iPod. The Bride loves this song! #TrustRobo

Congratulations to K&B. We love you both and we wish you many years of happiness.

vodkaGood thing I know a Baby Nurse and a Spinal Nurse who live downtown. They can hook me up to this Friday afternoon. I would ask my wife but her ass left me for Mickey Mouse !

Have a good weekend!

“You mean to tell me that you don’t have sweet tea” sponsored by Lipitor

Hope everyone had a great weekend. We sure as shit did and thankfully my dress pants still fit me as I slipped them on this morning. I am starting to get some hate mail as of late because of our Gastronomic Dining Experiences. This past weekend we checked another one off the list by dining at “The House” as it is known to the food snobs. For those of you wondering, we dined at the James Beard House.

The James Beard House and James Beard Awards are considered the Oscars for the young inspiring chefs. Granted there are a couple of different opinions on the house and the ‘visiting chefs’. I am not going to get into that but bottom line you do raise some money for a charity so at least you can feel somewhat good about yourself as you get stewed drunk in Chelsea. It has always been on my list so when LZ texted me asking if we wanted to go, we were on board. Naturally this was so far in advance I don’t think they had the schedule out so it was a crap shoot. I did inquire after we plunked down the cash for the tickets and was told that it was called “Art Meets Food Meets Sherry.” My first thought was “Oh Fuck, LZ has gotten me roped into one of those put on your bowtie but order a pizza afterwards because you are going to be hungry meals.” I did rock a bowtie and the food was substantial and I was getting excited to try what Chris Curren from Fulton Market Kitchen in Chicago had to offer. The menu was paired with Spanish Sherry from Antonio Flores and even though I am not a big fan of Sherry, it was a great pairing.

Now I have known some great friends and chefs who have cooked in the Beard House so we were excited to try this and see what it was all about. The house, yep it is really his house, is still preserved as it was when James Beard was alive. You dine on the second floor and although it is a little tight it really is a great evening. The staff is on point and busily plates and busses the silverware with ease and no interruptions. Granted you are getting crocked on high alcohol sherry but hey, why not have a little fun on a Friday night. Ok enough words, lets get down to the menu and some food pics (Ha right!)

Passed Appetizers included;

  • Oyster Shooters with Chowder emulsion and Tabasco
  • Foie Gras PB&J with Fois Gras Mousse and Strawberry-Rosemary Jam (that one of our guests could not taste the rosemary) *I could eat this for days*
  • Smoked Trout Brandade Cromesquis with Caper Aioli
  • Lamb Tartare with Egg Yolk Jam on Grilled Sourdough
  • And Naturally Tio Pepe Cocktails

Dinner Service Started with;

  • Glazed Nichols Farm & Orchard Carrot with Honey-Whipped Goat Cheese and Smoked Pistachios
  • Squid Ink Corzetti Pasta with Baby Octopus, Pickled Pearl Onions and Bone Marrow Emulsion (My favorite)
  • Sturgeon with Smoked Celeriac Puree, Dill, and Salmon Roe (Least Favorite)
  • Venison with Pickled Wild Mushrooms, Salt Roasted Root Vegetables, Blackberries and Juniper. (melted in your mouth good)
  • Apple Cake with Salted Caramel, Pecans and Pine Ice Cream
  • Ph’s Birthday Cake!!!

Oh and there was a different Sherry Pairing with each course. Or as one of the guests at our table told us; “Be careful, they give you full portions of wine but half portions of food. If you don’t watch out you may have a hangover tomorrow…….” #bitchplease #whydoyouthinkIwork

02-17-curren-chris%20resizedChef Chris Curren of Fulton Market Kitchen in Chicago. Don’t mind the tats, the man puts out some good plates. Hey Buckley – Put this one on your list, it is good!

img_0355Here is my picture of my place setting after the first course. *CBT is not a big fan of pictures of food. Except if it is bacon, then I will always put up pictures of bacon*

img_0356This is what I like about the Beard House. The back of house staff eats the same meal that we do in-between courses. You have no idea how many times back when I was putting on the black waiter pants that I would sneak food from the line.

img_0360Every once in a while you have to put on a bowtie and go eat a fancy meal. Friday night was that night.

Again, thanks to LZ for the invite and Happy Birthday FZ. Next cigar is on me!

Robo for the Valentine’s Day Win

Sorry to piss upset off my readers from Maine and Nova Scotia who were shoveling snow. Not to mention our friends were down in Belize looking for ‘a chicken’ and keeping the Belikin Beer supply in check. Last night  CBT not only had his smoking hot wife, Mrs. CBT, on his arm but the World Famous Travel Queen made a jaunt through the Holland Tunnel for a Happy Hour drinks. Yep, I win!

Hope that everyone’s Val-in-Times was a good one and you didn’t wake up in a chocolate hangover. It was great to see 3 Day Traveler and catch up. If you ears were burning then you were being spoken about you affectionately. Well except for you Pedro, but I did preface one story by “With All Due Respect.”  (I am kidding) Hopefully we can see Travel Queen this late summer in some far away distant location. Or she comes up here and crashes on our couch. Either way is good for us.

img_0338Go ahead Reaper and show me more pics of how beautiful living Pura Vida is. I win today wearing a heavy coat!

Have a good Hump Day!

Weekends are for rest right?

I am glad that the weekend is over. I am about worn out and it is only Monday! Now I promised my boss that I would not have “Whisky Voice” this morning so keep those “Oh CBT is hungover” because that isn’t the case. After our snow day on Thursday I had a bunch of stuff to get completed on Friday and play catch up. I get done with my day and head over to the Cigar joint for a quick cigar before I have to get ready to go out that night.

Friday night we headed down to Joe’s Pub to catch Losers Lounge tribute to Philly Soul. Not sure what that is? Think Teddy Pendergrass, The Spinners, The Delfonics and songs like “Love Train”, “Disco Inferno” and who could forget “You got what I need.” The show was great as usual and we headed to Blue Ribbon for a 1AM dinner reservation. Blue Ribbon was a mainstay when we would come up to visit Maria in New York. The fried chicken and oysters did not disappoint.

Saturday we slept in a little considering we got home at 3AM. I get my normal errands done and Mrs. Trumpet had to get some studying done. UWS Girl had mentioned about attending the Central Park Ice Festival Silent Disco and considering it was cold but not too cold I was game. Mrs. Trumpet stayed behind so I headed crosstown to W72nd street. Met up with her at an Irish Dive Bar by the name of Malachy’s. Trust me when I say that this place did not disappoint. The bartender was in her late 60’s and resembled Flo from the old sitcom “Alice.”  Headed over to the park and I learned something very valuable about free events in New York. Everyone and their brother will show up if you don’t have to pay for it. Met up with some friends to watch the Silent Disco for a while and ended up heading back to the house.

Sunday we had a friend in town from the old ACMB days and frequent offender of Belize Trips. Met up with her and her husband and tried ABC Kitchen for brunch. Let me tell you, the 3 week reservation that I had to get was well worth it. Hung out with LAB and her husband and we laughed and caught up. Since it was sleeting earlier in the day Mrs. Trumpet and I decided to behave on Sunday and she took a nap while I went to have a cigar with the boys. Made some spaghetti gravy/sauce and watched the Grammy’s.

teddyI have to say his Teddy Pendergrass is pretty good.

losers-loungeI should have pressed my parents to let me play the Tambourine in band.

img_0324I think they had a couple bottles of booze there.

img_0326At the Silent Disco. They have 2 DJ’s and people can either switch between the blue DJ or the red DJ. I guess the Blue DJ was jamming

img_0329Thanks again for the Vino and the California Oranges LAB and RB. I bet we will run into you in Belize in October! Love you guys.

Hope you had a good weekend too!

Things you learn in a Blizzard

What can I say, 2017 is a year of firsts for Carbunkle Trumpet. No I am not talking about the new president, that was yesterday. What I am talking about is this jacked up weather. Seriously would the person who called Mother Nature a Crack Whore please apologize? Earlier this year I survived the Nor’easter and let me tell you, that sucked. This week they were calling for ‘a significant snow event’ for New York and Long Island. They were calling for a blizzard or white out conditions in the city and we should seek shelter at times. I am sure that you are reading this in Memphis wondering what the hell that means. So did I until yesterday. Anyway here are some things that I learned yesterday during the Snowpocalypse.

  1. Forget that heavy wool coat, get that ski jacket out of the closet. Wet heavy snow and wool are not the greatest combination.
  2. Boots, Boots, Boots – If they aren’t waterproof you might as well wear flip flops.
  3. Seeing is overrated during a blizzard. I saw a bunch of people wearing ski goggles yesterday and it makes perfect sense. I may look into getting a pair.
  4. Some dogs love snow, our dogs…..not so much. I don’t blame them. The snow was high that they had belly rubbing.
  5. If one does not have children then you are instructed to head to the nearest bar. That actually is a law.

img_0269Maddy don’t care about snow, she has to poop!

img_0270This one however, what a diva!

rockyI knew that Rocky over in Park Slope would be a happy pup today!

img_0264Broke out the shit kickers earlier in the week when we had biblical rains.

img_0274Made it into the office for a couple hours so I could say that “I made it in” and promptly went to reward myself.

img_0275W41st street was not looking good. The sidewalk was fine but the street needed some help.

img_0272Wonder why I take Lipitor? This would be the reason.

img_0276Are you F’ing kidding me guys? Closed because of the snow? This would be a perfect day but no! Somebody has to be a P word and stay home.

img_0268I mean even the Chinese restaurant on 2nd Ave was open for Christsake!

img_0267Got to love that someone cross stitched this.

Have a good weekend. We are going to be meeting up with UWS Girl this weekend to go to a silent disco.

Social Media 101 by CBT

Sorry to delve into @Brizzyc’s backyard but some of you people need to calm the fuck hell down on this social media thing. I have a strict rule about social media/message boards and public forums that I have always adhered to;

  1. Don’t talk about politics.
  2. Don’t talk about religion.
  3. Don’t talk about gun control.
  4. Don’t talk about abortion.
  5. Don’t talk about current events.

That being said, can the remaining 30 or so friends who I still follow on Facebook please calm down? I make no bones about it, if you have broken one of those rules I unfollowed your ass butt and have been doing so since the election. Seriously, do you not realize that maybe your boss could access your comments? Two of my former managers probably have seen links to this blog on Facebook and Twitter. You think I am stupid enough to talk about my real job, name a person by their real name or do something to get my fat ass rear end fired? I was born at night but not last night.

Have you talked bad about your employer? Guess what folks, you probably should be fired. It is like people have lost their fucking friggin minds after the election. One of my work friends and I were talking about it walking down the street. She also unfollows people for the same reason by posting crap (either pro or against) and in her words; “Pretty much my feed now is cats, puppies, baby pictures and your goofy ass posts.”

So take a deep breath folks. Quit reading too many stupid and false stories. Go for a walk. Drink a beer. Just quit feeding this monster. To those who tweet the president. Do you really think he is going to respond? Better yet, watch what you say to the commander in chief because making a threat at him is going to get some guys in black suits knocking at your door.

maxresdefaultI think that I will bring back Lenten Corny Jokes early. What say you 6 readers?

Take a deep breath folks, do something strange today. Smile at a random stranger and say have a nice day. If you are daring even hug the mudda Fecker! Just don’t post that ish on Social Media.

Not sure where to put this post – TWSS

A couple of weeks back I went out for after work drinks with friends. I was tagging along and we decided to hit up a place in Hells Kitchen. I really wasn’t paying attention on how we got there but we walk in and this place was off the hook. Seriously you remember those movies where they walk into a night club and it was a former church or grand hall. Seriously all this place needed was go-go dancers on stripper poles. The music was right up my alley; The Cult “She Sells Sanctuary” welcomed us as we walked into the joint. I am going to have to ask Zsquared to bring us back there.

img_0236From the back looking to the front of the joint.

Seriously one of these days I am going to find the Saturday Night Fever bar on this island.

Hell to the Yes! 10 years

The past couple of days we have had some big anniversary milestones for Mrs. Trumpet and myself. First on Sunday it marked a year and a half of living here on this rock called Manhattan. Now for the couple of you naysayers who secretly said “You will never make it” I do have some good news for you….I guess. On Monday as I was walking back from Madison Avenue to First Avenue I walked past one of those construction scaffoldings. I got a little too close to a bolt (that I might add should have been covered with a plastic tip) and ripped my suit pants and part of my Barbour hunting coat. The bad thing about this is that this incident occurred right next to a convent where some nuns were standing outside. Yep, I issued a Mudda Fecker in front of a couple nuns. Sorry about that Sister.  How about that, we have survived living up here for a year and a half. Who would have guessed it. It really has flown by.

Now today being that it is the Tuesday following the Super bowl it marks our 10 year anniversary of stopping smoking cigarettes and for Mrs. Trumpet dipping. Ok, I am kidding but 10 years is fucking impressive. So for all of those of you who are dealing with stopping smoking or a bad habit, keep it up. You can do it! We both chose to quit the Tuesday following the Super Bowl because we knew that February would be slow and we would hole up in our house to ride out the first month.

More later but who would have guessed that 10 years ago we would have been celebrating stopping smoking and dipping in New York City. Now if my favorite tailor down the street can fix my jacket and my pants…..

img_0257We also went to Bryant Park this weekend to check out the Winter Carnival

img_0259And they also had Curling. Who knew that Colgate had a Curling Team

img_0258Such a silly sport

img_0260It is like Shuffleboard or Bocce but for Northern People who live on frozen ponds

Keep it light on a Tuesday!

Hey Kid…..

Bonus post today considering that it is Super Bowl Sunday. Ahh yes the only day of year where eating your face off on wings, pizza, and cheese dip is perfectly acceptable while downing a gallon of beer. Since I really don’t have a NFL team that I call my own. I mean I do pull for the Jets over the Giants because they are the Cubs of the NFL. But what I do care for on Super Bowl Sunday is the score was because I got money on a couple of football boards.

Football boards are as American as Apple Pie and Facebook debates on if the president is doing a great job or not. When I was in Memphis pretty much every bar that I would frequent would have one for the ‘big game’ and pay in was typically a buck to 20 dollars depending on the establishment. I remember back in the day when Rocky would have the 100.00 board and you thought of that as big money. They would have payouts at the end of each quarter but still the chance to win 2K was always fun.

Moving up here betting is on steroids. Not only do they have 5 dollar boards they also have hundred dollar, thousand dollar, two thousand dollar and yep even a ten thousand dollar board. There is a rumor that one of the big investment banking firms downtown has a million dollar board but I haven’t confirmed this. The cigar joint that I frequent has a couple of them and rather than pay out after each quarter they pay out at the end. Talk about a nice day at the track, who wouldn’t want to win 10K on a stupid football game? (psst – don’t tell Mrs. Trumpet but I am in on that board and even splitting another square with a buddy of mine)

Even my boss gets in on the action. Now gambling is frowned upon at the tour bus company but she was getting in on some action for her son’s baseball team for a fund raiser called 50-50. She wasn’t too sure where to pick her square so I told her that she should either go 4 across and 3 down for her birthday (same as mine I might add) or go X across and 10 down because she is hitting a big birthday this year. Both squares were already taken so I suggested she put her anniversary date.

So for me, I really don’t give 2 shits on who wins the game, well yes I do. I want the Falcons to win just because everybody up here hates the Patriots. But all I want is for the final score to be with the last numbers to be Falcons 3 and the Patriots 9. That way we will be getting paid at Baker Street. Also I hope that Jo’s numbers come in too because she went BIG BALLS and is playing the 2K buy in at the pub across the street from Baker Street.  Me I get a text from AS who works at SP and he asked me if I wanted in on a 1K board. Thankfully the squares were sold out before I could talk Justin in half with me. ?

0409501001484255879_filepickerDid you know that there is more money wagered on the Coin toss than the whole game?

img_0262-1 5K payout if we win! Hell to the yes!

Have a good day and don’t be a P word and call in sick tomorrow. Nobody likes a quitter!
