Dead Elvis Week

We are caught in a Trap….in Westbury Long Island

A couple weeks back Maria asked us if we wanted to go to the ETA (That is Elvis Tribute Artist) show at the Westbury Theater in Long Island. My first questions were; “Where the hell is Westbury, and how do we get there?” We took the LIRR from the Atlantic Station (again it is so nice not having to go into Penn if we don’t have to) to the Jamaica station and made a transfer. Bill and Maria picked us up from the station and we made a quick drive to the theater.

I have to say that I was impressed with the venue and the line up. Granted it is geared towards the older crowd but the future line up includes; Wayne Newton, Smoky Robinson, Paul Anka and some others. As Maria said to us, Wayne Newton is someone on the list that you have to see before they die. Why do you think that I always go see Jerry Lee Lewis when he would play at MIM BSMF.

The crowd was into it. I gathered that there were a bunch of those in attendance who were in Memphis last weekend and then came back to Long Island to catch the show. Lots of Elvis and Graceland gear in the lobby. This years act was a full piece band and the ETA who were preforming were Cody Ray Slaughter and Shawn Klush who were big ETA winner either from BBC or Elvis Presley Enterprises. They played all the hits and were great with the crowd giving them what the King would done if he were still alive.

Friday Round Up

Tough day yesterday for the Music Industry. Not only was it the 41st anniversary of the death of The King (if you don’t know who that is then we can’t be friends) but Aretha Franklin died yesterday. On the evening of the Candlelight vigil I texted my two fellow Elvis fans and we watched “The Highwaymen”. God Help us when we lose Willie Nelson. That will not be a good day.

Oh and Congrats to Queens Bully’s Chef Melvin “Boots” Johnson on his win on the Memphis version of Chopped. He edged out my friend Ernie Mellor and we plan on getting over that way in the near future to try his food out.

Here are some pictures from the past week;

The 40th Dead Elvis Week

I was with one of my colleagues yesterday and he glanced at my personal iFoam and asked who the guy in the funny glasses was. I literally stopped in the middle of 5th avenue to ask them if he were joking because one does not mock “The King”. They didn’t know and I really felt sorry for this person because not only did he not know who Elvis was he didn’t realize that today starts Dead Elvis Week. I explained to my friend about all of the pilgrims and the ETA’s (Elvis Tribute Artist)  and that they prefer that term instead of Elvis Impersonator. I explained about the ETA’s that come from all over the world from El Vez, to Indian (dot not feather) Elvis and everywhere in between.

So welcome to Memphis my fellow Pilgrams, Save travels to Georgia Peach  as she makes her way to Memphis today and hopefully it won’t be hotter than 2 rats fucking in a wool sock hot next week.

Guest Blogger – Dead Elvis Week 2016 by Priscilla “The Georgian” Peach

So we are back from our Mexican vacation. I had planned during my absence to have a friend of mine blog about her recent trip to Memphis during Dead Elvis Week. But the internet in Mexico wasn’t that great….or was I juiced like a Ferrari the entire week……anyway it didn’t happen. We got back to New York this past weekend and since I screwed the Mexican iguana and didn’t get this posted last week I am going to give my friend, Priscilla “The Georgian” Peach, top Monday billing. Now before you 6 readers start busting my balls because P squared is much more attractive than I am and writes a helluva lot better than my drunken ramblings you are going to have to wait till she starts her own blog. I did enjoy seeing her pictures of Memphis and it is nice to know that there are still some 40 somethings out there who are Elvis Fans too!

Without further adieu I present Ms. Priscilla “The Georgian” Peach’s first blog entry, and please encourage her to rip off that Band-Aid and start blogging.
*Thanks Carol, I appreciate you writing about the trip and hope to see you on Elvis Presley Boulevard maybe next year.*

HERE IS Priscilla’s Blog Entry;

So I was asked to participate in a blog for “Dead Elvis Week”, I’m not sure CBT knew what he was asking when I returned.  Here is my back story on Elvis…

1973 Elvis performed in Atlanta, GA, I was 3, I was sent to my grandmothers, mad and crying while my parents went to the show.  Never forgave them, I already loved him then. cg 1August 16, 1979- I’m on the way to Memphis to see my future husband, I’m 7.  In a motel in Nashville, I learn that Elvis is dead.  So the parental units are really in a mess now.  We were there for a Southeastern Shrine Convention, 2,000 Shriners plus 20,000+ people for Elvis’s death, one can only imagine, and I remember it like it was yesterday.  Memphis is the hottest place on earth in August, now add 20,000 unexpected guests + 2,000 Shriners = Hot Mess/Dumpster Fire. (I got to do everything Elvis that I wanted, during this week)

How I was reconnected:

So I fell off the Elvis grid for a long time and was in the closet, I had my cd’s I listened to occasionally and always listened during Christmas, ALWAYS watched my Elvis movies whenever they were on.  I learned a friend was a fan, she said, “you have to come to Brunswick with us to Elvis Fest,cg2

They’re Elvis Tribute Artists” (ETA’S).  Sure, Ok? I’m in, I’m up for anything.  My first encounter with ETA’s, I was a little nervous, I thought I had walked into the Elvis Twilight Zone and I wasn’t sure what was about to happen.  It was a “meet and greet” the night before the Brunswick Elvis Fest, I had my eyes on everyone, some more than others.  What in hell is about to happen?  This is the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen, well, that’s questionable, but pretty weird.  I’m not sure I’m happy about this.  These guys are trying to be Elvis, they all resemble Elvis, this is not happening to me right now. We are jammed in a tiny lobby with a LOT of women packed on top of each other, Tina and I being the youngest by far. Tina says, “There is so in so, do you want your picture with him?” I said, “No, I’m good, I’m trying to quit.”  The next day was all Elvis ALL day in the theater.  Later, in the courtyard, I hear Elvis….I turn my head and I said, “Who is THAT?” Our ETA friend said, “Alex Mitchell, young guy, he’s good.”  I said, “Oh yeah, he is!”cg3

He sounds phenomenal and looks even better. I was hooked my reintroduction to the man I always loved…Elvis.

One reason we went to Memphis during Elvis week, Alex was in the finals for Semi Pro and won his division and our other favorites were in the Ultimate and Pro Division Contests.

We made some great friends on this trip, some OLD, some new, some I can’t mention, some that slipped away, some that were right there on stage in my face, I didn’t even know it. Saturday night Jeff Lewis and Friends after Party,cg4

These handsome guys are singing, I know Jeff Lewis, I didn’t know the other two or so I thought. Listening to Elvis XM Radio Sunday morning, I hear, “signing off, guest DJ Jon Waterhouse, had a great time at the Saturday night after party.”  I message a Jon that I know and said, “I have a crazy question? Are you on Elvis XM in Memphis?”… I sure am, Crazy Elvis fan, instant connection watched him on stage, didn’t even realize it was him.  I hadn’t seen Jon since High School so it had been a minute. We never connected in Memphis but we did through Elvis, that’s what matters.

I’ve been very fortunate to travel, see beautiful places, and have fun, but Elvis Week was one of the greatest experiences I’ve had in a long time.  I’m not sure why it took me 39 years to return.  It will not be my last.cg5

Reconnected with an old Memphisinian (HA) *She is referring me* and he suggested a great restaurant on our first night. *Some joint on Monroe btw Front and Main named Bardog. Anyone ever been there?*cg6

My running buddy…Tina Brock!!

cg7Graceland silliness, No makeup left after that tear fest

cg8I stood, walked, ran, talked, sat in the rain more than I can ever remember.  One time to get the car so an Elvis wouldn’t mess up his hair….Club Handy: Where Everybody knew our name.

cg10Club Handy Friends on Beale Street

cg11

The Racquetball Room, Graceland, Elvis played piano here for the last time before getting ready to go on his next tour.  He went inside to Graceland where he passed away soon after at the age of 42.  Walking into this building was not a good moment for me.

Sun Studios and the backdoor where he would enter, I believe we saw the ghost of Elvis

Well Elvis is gone, Alex is too young for me, I’ll just have to keep loving the ETA’s, and appreciating their love of the King.

Thanks Priscilla for the entry. By the way, since the “Fellow Bloggers You Should Also Read” didn’t get off the ground if you want to be a “Guest Blogger” let me know.
