Brooklyn BBQ

Support Local But More Importantly Know How To Heat Up Food Properly

So I work with 2 people, probably 3 who don’t cook at home. One of them even boasts that his fridge is empty with the exception of maybe a banana and just has Vodka in the freezer. The Rutgers grad, shit, I am pretty sure she keeps her sweaters in her oven. I mean with the endless food options up here why not. Sadly our favorite restaurants are hurting right now with the new rules they have to abide by. But let’s be honest. Take Out Food can suck when it gets cold right?

So the other night Geranium and I ordered some good ole Brooklyn BBQ from the fine folks over at Morgan’s in Park Slope. We ordered some pulled pork, brisket and ribs for dinner. Oh we also had slaw, mac & cheese and of course cornbread. By the way when did Cornbread become a staple of BBQ?

Here is what I did and for you 3 who don’t know how to boil water – pay attention;

  • When the food arrived I removed the plastic lids from the tin boxes and put them on a sheet pan. Side Note – It really is strange to still see Styrofoam containers in Memphis. We got rid of them a while back.
  • Now Rather than popping into the oven and have the food dry out. I Poured some water in the pan and then covered it tightly with foil. Place the tray in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes. This is called steaming and will put much needed moisture back into the food.
  • What came out was good ole smoked goodness and one would think we ate it straight from the line.
I may have arranged the food to look like the featured picture to stoke some more fun.
That is the last time I let Geranium order bulk foil. Almost taken 4 years to burn through it.
Pour about a cup of water on the tray and cover tightly with foil
NG – You do this for “Here Boy” and you will be elevated to the likes of Ina
The Ribs were good. Mac & Cheese – meh
Oh the Photographer…..drunk!
I do like Morgan’s Queso and Chips
Yo Chef Kelly English – Can you make a PSA down there asking the fine Memphis folks when they order food say if they need disposable service packs or not? These guys gave us just one. The amount of food we ordered in terms of normal take out – family of 4.
Seriously Folks – By telling the restaurant we can help them save costs and save what is left of this environment.

Folks you have to support these mom & pop places. They need the most help. Get Creative and help these folks. There was an old saying that read;

“If you don’t buy something we both are going to starve!”

Wash your hands and stay inside!

Let’s Recap Shall We? Trips and Food

We were really busy in 2018. I sit back and think about what all that we did last year I had to go to the calendar 4 times. I mean we were fucking busy in 2018. We went a bunch of places this year and that was even with Mary Louise doing all her shit this year. From her group final presentation for NYU, graduating from NYU, starting a new career, moving to Brooklyn, and not divorcing my ass we ate and traveled a bunch.

Made a trip to Belize to see our friends in February. We made a trip to Memphis to become God Parents for Willimena Esmerelda. We went to Bay Ridge Brooklyn for dinner a couple times. We made a trip Upstate to the Hudson Valley. We went to Philly a couple times, Baltimore for Crab, ML went to The Hamptons during the summer. Oh we also made a trip to Mexico with RJ, Mal-O-Rie, and Senorita JL. Went to St. Louis for Baby Fine Hair and Kristina’s wedding in the fall. The new stadium on campus and great friends made us visit Northwest Arkansas and then we made Memphis for Christmas.

Now here is where I am going to get some serious Fucking hate mail. We ate some serious good grub this past year. LeCoq Rico for a fancy Chicken dinner one night. Enjoyed some fine Swiss wines with the Muphranks along with some Raclette (think broiled half wheel) of cheese. We enjoyed one of Geoffrey Zakarian’s restaurants with our friend Tucker. Had an authentic Cheese Steak while we were in Philly (you know for the hangover) and it was good. For our anniversary we dined at Benjamin’s Steakhouse and the steak was good. And to finish out the holidays we of course ate at one of Thomas Keller’s joints in the Time Warner Center. I know that I am missing some places but I am going to end this because some folks may send me some more hate mail.

I love this woman! We have a lot in common and both being damn good looking is the beside the point.
Breakfast View in San Pedro Town Belize
Ironic that when we lived in Memphis we weren’t too far from the Forum. Now in Brooklyn we aren’t too far from this sucker.
Bad Lighting on Mary Louise but this is her the morning of her graduation. And let the record show that I will punch her in the dick if she goes for her Doctorate.
On the way up the Hudson River to see Vivian and Stone
Crab is good
That kid is going to break hearts I tell you!
No lies being told here at all!

Who doesn’t love some good Pastrami from Katz’s
Shrimp Sticks from Blue Water Grill in Belize. This is worth the Fucking Trip to Belize in the middle of a Hurricane and twice on Sunday.
Boy did this picture get some traction in Memphis.
Don’t laugh folks this is some good shit here!

At least I didn’t post any more pictures of dinner from Per Se.

Finding Memphis Food in New York – Some of you are a bunch of Titty Babies!!!!

Yeah I called you a snowflake, snowflake. I mean come on Memphis….You let a silly 5 year old tweet and article get your panties all in a wad because someone threatened your beloved BBQ? I mean lets talk about some serious fucking issues……

I am kidding folks, slow your breathing. Now that the ‘preview’ part on my two social media platforms picked up those three sentences I can come clean. Much like that ill fated tweet I do hope that I can get a bunch of clicks by people who actually think I was serious. Sorry if some of you think that I was serious about that. I have said it before and I will say it again;

“Trying to Find Memphis Barbeque in New York City is much like trying to find a New York Bagel in Memphis.”

That tweet on Sunday was a perfect segway into my point today. We love eating up here in New York. The different cuisines, the different flavors, the 3 Michelin Star restaurants it is something that you can’t explain in 500 words or less. One such cuisine that we have not really found up here is Cajun/NOLA Food. We tried a Bourbon Street joint near restaurant row a couple years ago and it was horrible. On each trip back to Memphis we would immediately head straight to Bayou Bar and Grill or Second Line to get our fix but there had to be a good option here in New York. 2 weeks ago we were Sunday Funday’ng up on Second Avenue and were talking to some fellow patrons and they recommended a joint up the street at Second Avenue and 90th called The Infirmary.

I made a mental note and this past week I was in the area and popped in for a quick bite. The Menu was straight Cajun/NOLA, they had poboys, catfish entrees and even had Abita beers. The bar reminded me of the old “Sleep Out Louie’s” and Original “Bayou Bar and Grill” white marble and it didn’t smell of stale beer and bleach so that was a plus. The food was killer and we will be back!

IMG_2769Bar and yes they have Frose for you fancy people – Old SOL Alums – recall the frozen Margarita Machine?

IMG_2771You have to respect a joint that has not one but two Absinthe vessels.

CajunInfirmaryNYCRoastBeefPoBoy.0I mean have you ever tried to eat a poboy with a raging hard on? It was fierce I tell you!

IMG_2772Catfish, Fried Chicken, Oysters, PoBoys, Shrimp and Grits, its all there folks!

IMG_2770Cloth napkins, Crystal Hot Sauce – Life is good my friends.

IMG_0917 (1)So they lack Sides and don’t believe in proper sandwich buns, some of you guys are just mean I tell you! They do have a good smoked Pastrami up here that is pretty good.

Hope you had a good laugh and got to the bottom of this post before you are blasting me on Social Media.
