Losers Lounge Takes on Stax Music

Otis Redding, The Staple Singers, Sam & Dave, Carla and Rufus Thomas, Booker T & the MG’s and a whole bunch of others were featured by the Joe McGinty 7 and The Losers last weekend. I was really excited to see this feature given that I am a Memphis guy. The show was great but man I wish that they did a little Black Moses. Sadly the show we saw didn’t feature any but it was a great time with The VQ and the Asian Fireman. On thing that was strange was that a lot of the normal players were off on Friday night but were playing on Saturday night. Well as long as Donahue look a like Mike Fornatale and Carlton Smith were on it was going to be a good one.

Opening Act – Mr. Big Stuff
Liz Vice singing “These Arms of Mine”
Milton and Julia Joseph – Breakdown
Carlton “Soul; Man” Smith!
La La Brooks formally of The Crystals Singing Gee Whiz
Pretty Much when Mike Fornatale is going to sing its going to be a good one!
Yes he killed Otis’ version of “Try a Little Tenderness”
Joe McGinty Finishing up “The Ballad of El Goodo”

By the way, great job singing the classics. I have to say that singing some of the original Stax songs “Walkin the Dog” is hard to do if you don’t have that voice. David Milone did The World’s Oldest Teenager proud!

Don’t Rock The Boat – Losers Lounge takes to the Hudson

You have heard about our many visits to Joe’s Pub to see The Losers Lounge. During the summer the Losers traditionally take a break and don’t perform but kick back up in the fall months. The next show is next month but there was a special performance that Vivian and Stone had purchased tickets and suggested that we attend. The show was a Disco Themed and it was on the Circle Line boat.

Joe and the Losers didn’t disappoint at all! Playing all the hits and with the backdrop of Manhattan you get the picture. It was cool as crap!

Spring Like Weather and Then Hurricane Tucker

Hope you guys had a fun weekend. I am sure that there a some of you in Memphis who didn’t heed my warning on Twitter and blew it out hard at Rajun Cajun yesterday. Here is to hoping that your hands aren’t shaking too bad as you read this. Finally the weather broke on Friday and Saturday till 5PM. It actually was ‘bead of sweat’ warm on Friday as I joked with the doormen that people will probably be bitching about the heat. Saturday didn’t disappoint until the front moved in and it got chilly on our ride home from Brooklyn.

Friday I got home and we had our Midwestern friend Tucker heading in from New Jersey. She was across the Hudson for work training and decided to spend an evening with us and fly out Saturday. This was just fine with us as we knew we were in for a full fun night. Since she was rolling into town I was able to find 3 tickets to Losers Lounge Friday night as they were giving tribute to “The Last Waltz.” We met up at the apartment and then had dinner at a Geoffrey Zakarian joint in Midtown East.

If you have been paying attention you will know that I have been doing some juice cleansing and clean eating. Well that shit came to a tumbling halt on Friday as I switched over from green grass and tree bark drinks to Potato based liquid and what the hell. I got me a GZ burger and added bacon to it too! The show didn’t disappoint and the post show drinks were good (?) and before Tucker’s hair could deflate she was headed to LGA.

Saturday we went over to Downtown Brooklyn to check out apartments and had drinks with lady barrister since Mr. 3 First Names was out of town.  Walking into The Commissioner was warm and sunny and temps in the 70’s. Walking out the bottom dropped out of the bottom and it was around 50 with a good wind. Thankfully we had some jet fuel in us but that walk to the subway was brutal!

IMG_2970Sadly I never saw the movie and the second act didn’t dissapoint

Thanks for a fun weekend Tucker and hope everyone behaved this weekend. Its going to be a shitty couple of days up here weather wise.

Losers Lounge Tribute to Fleetwood Mac

The first weekend of June the Losers and the Joe McGinty 7 assembled one last time before the summer break. This show was to showcase the songs from Fleetwood Mac. This time we were joined by UWS Girl and Z Squared along with the other malcontents. No assless chaps like we saw at the George Michael show which probably scared EGP but there was a good duet.

IMG_0984I need some Bongo’s! Everything is better with Bongos!

IMG_0988I pretty much peed down my leg laughing from this duet.

IMG_0983Yes she is wearing a Kaftan and probably sporting a “bump it” too!

It was a great time and this October we will be jamming to…THE M’Effin Bee Gee’s!

Losers Lounge – Sir Elton John 2.0

If you are wondering what I am talking about feel free to read the proper back story HERE and don’t worry we can wait on you….. This past Friday Mrs. Trumpet and I headed down to Joe’s Pub to listen to The Joe McGinty 7 perform Loser’s Lounge tribute to Sir Elton John. We did the hard math that night and determined that it was 21 years when we went to the First Losers Lounge show. This year’s show was equally as great. Sadly we didn’t have someone eviscerate “Rocket Man” like the first show but all of them were equally as good.

We attended with Maria and BoBo who was fresh off of his hospital tour and Maria upped the stakes and got us front row seats. 23 songs on the set list, starting with “Tiny Dancer” and finishing with naturally “Step into Christmas” it was a good time Friday night. When I say that you are missing a great time, I am serious. We even got one of my 6 readers out of “Crime Free Upper West Side” to attend and we think she liked it. Not sure who the next tribute will be but we will keep you posted.

The Return to Loser’s Lounge

Back when we used to vacation in New York to see our Consigliore and friends we would try to always make the trip during Christmas. One year before our trip Maria mentioned that we should go see “The Losers Lounge” show in the legendary nightclub Fez below Time Café in NoHo. Not really knowing what “Losers Lounge” was about we said sure and she booked us some seats for their upcoming show.

Losers Lounge started back in 1993 by Joe McGinty who was the former keyboard for the Psychedelic Furs and session musician for bands like the Ramones. He put together a group of musicians who played in various bands in New York and abroad. Each show they do a Tribute to a band or musician that have included; Talking Heads, Burt Bacharach, Neil Diamond, David Bowie, Dusty Springfield, John Lennon, Elvis Costello, The Smiths vs The Cure, Queen, Roxy Music, Sony & Cher, Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart and even Sesame Street. The show that we were to see was Losers Lounge Tribute to Sir Elton John.

I can’t recall all of the songs they played that night but it was unbelievable. There must have been 20 musicians on the stage at one time and some of the singers were really good or in the case of the song “Rocket Man” really bad but in a good way. We were hooked on it and had a blast. The next year before our trip we asked Maria if Losers Lounge was doing another tribute and she said that she wasn’t too keen on it but if we wanted to go to it she would get some tickets. The tribute was to Todd Rundgren and we were pumped! Yes, they played the infamous “Bang on your drum” and it brought down the house. To our surprise we were seated next to Liv Tyler for the show and again the show was killer.

About 2 months ago Maria texted us saying that she just got the notification that Losers Lounge was to do another tribute and this one would be to the late great artist “Prince”. We told her to get us some tickets so a table was reserved at Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater the new home to all Losers Lounge shows. Mrs. Trumpet was out of pocket this past weekend and since we only had 1 extra ticket we couldn’t find a third so it was just Maria and I for the 9:30 show on Saturday night.

The plan was to meet up at and have dinner at The Public Theater and a couple drinks prior to the show. Dinner was great and we took our places inside Joe’s Pub which is a quaint (yes I just used that to describe a music venue) small arena that probably holds 250. They print out the set list and they had 25 songs on the bill that night with one intermission. I am sorry but there really is no way to describe what we saw and heard. It was hilarious and really good. Some songs were good and some were bad but in a “I can’t believe that they did the song that way”! Next were the outfits. One singer belted out “The Beautiful Ones” in a sliver sequined robe that still haunts me 2 days after. When all said and done they played for 3 hours and we decided to book the December show. In December Losers Lounge will tribute to SIR ELTON JOHN again! God I hope the same guy who played Rocket Man is back. It still puts a smile on my face.
