Oysters on the half shell

“Have you been to the Oyster Bar at Grand Central?”

I would get this question pretty much every time I would talk to my fellow coworker, eye-talian and lover of smoked meats, Guido. I honestly told him that it wasn’t like I was avoiding this joint. It seemed like anytime that I was in Grand Central with some time to kill, waiting for a Metro North train the damned thing would be closed. Back tracking a bit – a couple of weeks ago Mary Louise was returning from a work trip and found herself in Grand Central so she had lunch there. She gave it glowing reviews and said it wasn’t as touristy as one would imagine.

Last Friday Mary Louise was, once again, out of town I found myself in Grand Central around 4:30. I was feeling somewhat peckish so I went looking for food before my long commute home (New Yorkers are you reading this?) So here I was, coming down the ramp, and saw that Oyster Bar was open. I knew that the dog was fine having been taken out by the dog walker so I decided to hang out at Grand Central for the Late Afternoon!

First of all, this place is frigging huge! I had no idea how big it was because it looks very small from the outside. I found a spot at the bar and God Bless Carlos, the server, he was as busy as a one legged man in an ass kicking contest. I found a home at the “shucking bar” since the majority of the oysters are broken here. I was sitting between a mix of Midtown attorneys finishing up a weeks work and tourists who were pissed that it was taking so slow. I knew I was in the right spot because Carlos ran by me 3 times with various requests/specials and he liked that I was quick with my response.

I started with a half dozen and I told Carlos to pick the best of the bunch. *Disclaimer – I don’t know much about Northeastern oysters so I always trust the experts.* After enjoying the 6 best oysters I have had in a while, I watched one of the chefs make a soup from scratch about a dozen times. I really didn’t need any soup but I always appreciate someone who loves what they do. I asked Carlos what soup I wanted and he suggested the Oyster Pan Roast. This is pretty much a clam based soup with cream and tomatoes. Frigging Tomato Soup with oysters? I am in!

My View from the Front Line
Hated those 6 oysters!
Yo Holmes, what you making? Can I get a Sample?
This is some Good Shit!

Guido – You are right, I have been remiss on visiting the Oyster Bar. I am now a fan but still have an issue being only open during weird working hours!

The Carl Lipbalm Memorial Scholarship Winner Comes to The Big Apple

Remember back 2 years ago when we had one of our niece’s come up to celebrate her graduating from High School. So we had a cousin aka “Love Bug” come up this past weekend. The agenda for the past weekend was dinner Thursday Night. Bum around town on Friday and have dinner with the other cousin in downtown Brooklyn. Saturday a play was in order and then we would figure out dinner.

We really had a great time spending the weekend with “Love Bug” and naturally watching her experience a lot of things that we now take for granted up here. “Love Bug” had a blast and she found out a couple of things; Raw Oysters on the half shell are a hard no. Breaded and Baked Clams ala Patrizias of Brooklyn are also frowned upon. But I am happy to report that escargot from Blue Ribbon gets a pass and she loved street meat from The Hallal Guys.

The weekend was fun and we had a blast with her. Thanks to her momma and daddy for letting us hang out with her.

IMG_4154Love Bug Takes on The Big Apple and Times Square!

IMG_4155The closest that I made it to a Broadway musical! That is Mary Louise’s job!

IMG_4156All kidding aside Times Square is still pretty cool and has an undeniable energy about it!

IMG_4163Getting a slice at Joe’s Pizza! Can’t get anymore Authentic NYC than this!

IMG_4166Here Love Bug is about to take down here first Raw Oyster!

IMG_4167Unfortunately I don’t have the picture of her reaction when she put the ‘snot like’ oyster in her mouth. She was a good sport by trying it! I mean they don’t have an abundance of saltwater oysters in Northwest Arkansas!

IMG_4174“Wait we are going to an intersection in Midtown Manhattan to have lunch?”

IMG_4176We made our way downtown by Trinity Church/The 911 Church and she found some old dead guy’s grave. For those of you wondering – the white grave is Alexander Hamilton’s grave. I hear he had a play written about him.

IMG_4184Wait it isn’t my birthday……

IMG_4183Let us Celebrate “Love Bug’s” fake birthday!

IMG_4187The Traffic here really bites you know Uncle CBT? Why didn’t you get me an Uber for Helicopters?

IMG_4190I can see my house from here! Sadly the day we went to the roof it was overcast but I am sure that some good snaps were taken.

Come back anytime Love Bug but make sure that you don’t tell your little brother about what goes on in New York. Next year is his turn.

The Trumpets Got Crabs Last Weekend

Well that should get your attention if you are reading this not fully awake this morning. Get your mind out of the gutter you sick Fecks. We went to Baltimore on Amtrak this past weekend and we had a blast. Not only did we over indulge on shellfish and other goodies we got to spend time with some former Memphians too! Yep we got to see Baltimore BjorkSue, The Good Doctor, and baby Elvis and we got to hang out with my former Bar wife and her husband too!

We arrived night via Amtrak and let me tell you how great it really as compared to air travel. Arrive anytime before your train departs, coach seats are as nice as First Class, you can retreat to the quiet car if you like. The Bar Car opens right after the train takes off and you have power outlets all over the place. Seriously, no wonder Former VP Joe Biden prefers it over air or car travel.

Last weekend we took in a bit of culture and visited a Rye Bourbon distillery. Baltimore at one time was the largest Rye distillery in the country as Rye was used to replenish the soil from Tobacco farming. Afterwards we got to ‘bust up some crabs’ at Nicks on the water and again ate our asses off. That evening we dined in Little Italy and had some drinks afterward in the Pirate section of Baltimore. We will be back! Baltimore is a fun time!

IMG_4066He is going to break hearts I tell you! Wait till he gets the drum set that Tio Robo sends him for Christmas!

IMG_4082Next time we are going to order the Large Crabs, They were good!

IMG_4069Was in Baltimore roughly 43 hours and we ate that many oysters too!

IMG_4068Delaware Bay and Salt Pond were the best!

IMG_4071Roughly I ate my weight in Lobster too!

IMG_4078We got to taste some of the goods at Sagamore Spirit. FYI – The White Rye tastes like it should be in Mason Jar.

IMG_4104Out front before the tour.

IMG_4105Love the old pics on the wall at the Distillery

IMG_4106View While busting up some Crabs!

IMG_4088No this isn’t church. This was Sunday Brunch.

IMG_4090I do love Sunday Brunch!

Again it was great to see everyone and hang out. We will be back for sure!

CBT Breaks His Own Rule

Forgive me Lord, I took a bunch of food pictures this past weekend. And to make matters worse, I am now about to blog about it. I know that Ashley B is probably laughing her head off right now but yes, I am breaking Robo Rule #1. Anyway here are the pics of the wonderful food that we ate this past weekend and Shout Out to my favorite brown Belizean who would sent me ugly Snapchat messages all weekend long.

IMG_2162Half Dozen were killed within 3 minutes of arrival
